Horse riding camp day 1

Hello! Today I had horse riding camp, and it was so much fun!

I woke up around 7:30 to pack my lunch and some snacks, then got ready for the day. I left the house around 8:30 and headed to the barn. I forgot my helmet today (oops!), which was pretty silly of me, especially since I really needed it. Luckily, I was able to borrow one from the barn, so it all worked out.

I arrived right at 9:00 and started the day by decorating a notebook. We’re using these notebooks to track our progress and also observe how other riders are doing. After that, we had our own sort of private lessons. Two girls rode before me, and while I was waiting for my turn, we worked on leg wraps. Wraps are used when a horse is injured, and they help support and protect the horse’s legs. It was actually really cool learning how to do that.

Then it was my turn to ride. The lesson was really interesting. We started with a warm-up, walking and practicing a position called “stand-up and stay,” which helps you find the center of the saddle. Then we worked on trotting. It was a bit challenging, I kept leaning back too much and using my wrists to stay up, which isn’t ideal.

After that, we did no-stirrup work. We practiced something called “posting 4, standing 4,” which was hard, especially the standing part without stirrups! Then, my trainer took away my reins and told me to put my hands on my hips. At first, I thought I was going to fall off, but I actually stayed on, and it went really well. We even cantered like that! I had my reins for the transition into the canter, but once I was moving, I had to ride without them. I was nervous we were going to crash, but my trainer reassured me that she would help, and everything turned out great. Honestly, it was one of the best lessons I’ve had!

After the lesson, we had lunch and some snacks, then headed down to the pool. That was a blast! I played games with my friends and just had a really fun time. After swimming, we did bareback riding in our swimsuits, which felt kind of weird but also really cool! We did some walking and trotting bareback, and it was such a unique experience.

That’s a wrap on my camp day today. Come back tomorrow for another camp day update!
